Mission

Why we exist

Sierra Therapeutics exists to improve mental health for consumers and families across Australia through clinical excellence, education, consultation and collaboration.

Sierra Therapeutics is a private psychiatry and mental health consultancy operating across clinical, educational, and collaborative domains.

Sierra Therapeutics was founded by Dr. Timothy Leow, a Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist based in North Queensland, Australia. Driven by a deep commitment to the people and communities he serves, Dr. Leow established Sierra Therapeutics with a clear vision: that every individual deserves the opportunity to thrive — supported by strong families, connected communities, and compassionate care. Together, we walk alongside people on their journey toward mental health and wellbeing.

Values

What guides our work

Evidence-based practice

We are guided by patient-centred care, evidence-based practice in every clinical, educational, and collaborative setting.

Person-centred care

We prioritise thoughtful, respectful care that responds to the needs of patients, families, and partners.

Thoughtful communication

We value clarity, care, and precision in how we listen, advise, teach, and work with others.

Meaningful partnership

We are committed to meaningful partnerships with our consumers, their families and loved ones, and across sectors to strengthen communities and encourage mental health recovery.

Experienced and thoughtful care

Sierra Therapeutics is supported by clinicians and collaborators who bring depth of experience across psychiatry, education, and mental health service development. Our team approach is grounded in careful listening, evidence-based practice, and respectful partnership with patients, families, professionals, and organisations.

Our work spans three interconnected arms — clinical services, teaching, and collaborative mental health initiatives — united by a shared belief that lasting change in mental health requires excellence at every level: individual care, professional education, and systemic design.

We work with adults, young people, and the organisations and systems that support them. Whether that means a careful psychiatric assessment, a keynote address, or co-designing a mental health service from the ground up, we bring the same standard of rigour and the same quality of attention.

Dr. Timothy Leow is a Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist practising in North Queensland, Australia. Dr. Leow’s pre-medical journey began with his childhood training of how to care for others by his late grandfather, Elder Khoo Peng Kiat who was a Nursing Tutor in Singapore. With the support of his family, he completed medical school at Western Sydney University, and trained in psychiatry across Townsville and Perth, before returning to subspecialise in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry. He brings almost 10 years of clinical experience working with young people, adults, and families navigating some of the most complex presentations in mental health. His clinical work has been shaped by the realities of regional and remote Australia — where access to specialist care is limited, the need is great, and the communities are resilient.

Alongside his clinical practice, Dr. Leow has developed a parallel commitment to education and systemic change. He has worked with Health Translations Queensland, James Cook University, The Townsville Hospital and Health Service, Perth Children’s Hospital, CathED and various other local NGOs and schools to translate psychiatric knowledge into practical capability for the professionals, organisations, and communities who encounter mental health every day.

Sierra Therapeutics grew from a conviction that quality mental health care cannot rest on clinical work alone. Dr. Leow founded the organisation to build something larger — a platform where rigorous clinical practice, thoughtful teaching, and cross-sector collaboration could work together toward the same goal: individuals who are well, supported by strong families and connected communities.

He works with adults and young people, and takes particular interest in child and youth mental health, family and systems integrated care, comprehensive psychiatric assessments and care, culturally responsive care, regional, rural and remote health, neurodevelopmental problems, behavioural addictions, and medico-legal psychiatry.
